Bag Factory Artists’ Studios is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the 6th edition of the 2024/2025 Young Womxn Studio Bursary which was established in 2019. This studio bursary has been generously supported by renowned South African artist and Bag Factory founding member, Sam Nhlengethwa since its inception.
The prestigious bursary is open to emerging and early-career womxn artists who are based in South Africa and working in contemporary visual art. Applicants must be under the age of 35 and have not previously benefited from any of the Bag Factory’s awards or studio bursaries.
The recipients will receive:
• A fully funded shared studio space of approximately 23 m2 at the Bag Factory for 12 months, starting from 4 November 2024 (non-residential but accessible 7 days a week).
• Studio critique sessions with industry professionals during the residency.
• The opportunity to engage with Bag Factory artists, international visiting artists, curators, and arts professionals.
• Inclusion in Bag Factory exhibitions, open studios and creative programmes.
• Access to communal facilities and Wi-Fi.
• The opportunity to realise a solo exhibition at the end of the bursary period.
Please note that this bursary is focused on cultural and professional development and therefore does not provide additional funding for materials, accommodation, or transport.
Eligibility:
• Artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, lens-based, and performance-based art are encouraged to apply. The Bag Factory fosters a collaborative, non-hierarchical creative environment where exchange, growth, and experimentation are prioritised.
• Artist must self-identify as a womxn
• Artist must be under the age of 35
• Artist must be based in Johannesburg and/ or be able travel to Fordsburg on a regular basis
• Artist must not have previously benefited from any Bag Factory awards or bursaries
Expectations of the Artist:
• Work from the Bag Factory studio at least 4 full weekdays per week.
• Participate in all Bag Factory events and artists’ meetings.
• Submit a written report at the end of the residency.
• Commit to the full 12-month period.
