10 x Artists will be selected and their individual projects. Successful candidates  will be informed in the week of 20th November 2023

Terms and conditions for the development and submission of proposals:

  1. Applications require the proposal to include
    1. Unpack the theme expressed in the artwork and its relevance to the context of Bag Factory and surrounding area;
    2. Provide a visual proposal that includes a digital scaled rendition of the proposed Public Art/Design work.
    3. Breakdown of Budget e.g. Artist fee, Materials & Installation, Contingency, etc.
    4. Production Schedule (please include project progress check-in dates with the Bag Factory team between 27th November - 15th December 2023 and from 12 - 19 January 2024):
      1. Phase 1 – Final rendition of approved project
      2. Phase 2 – Proof of 50% completion of project
      3. Phase 3 – Delivery and/or Installation of project
  1. The artist/creative is to work within the designated budget.
  2. Funding will be disbursed in 3 Tranches as per the above phases: 25% upon provision of renders of approved proposal, 25% upon Stage 2 completion & Balance of 50% installation/delivery of the project (Phase 3).
  3. The artwork is to be produced 27 November 2023 – 19 January 2024.
  4. The artwork is to be delivered and/or installed on the exterior of the Bag Factory façade by the creative between 22- 26 January 2024.

OPEN CALL: ART COMMISSIONS FROM VISUAL ARTISTS/INDUSTRIAL AND FURNITURE DESIGNERS/STREET ARTISTS

The project is aimed at providing young and mid-career creatives with the opportunity to create artworks that provide them with a modest income, while also uplifting Bag Factory Artists’ studios’ immediate environment, and takes into consideration the socio-cultural and economic contexts of our site. It is with this impetus that we hereby invite you to submit proposals for commissioned artworks using the following criteria and categories:

CRITERIA

Topical Focus areas: Bag Factory’s surrounding environment, Fordsburg’s multicultural social fabric, resilience and optimism and play, encouraging interaction.

Successful proposals will be considered on the grounds of Ingenuity and creativity; Improvisation given the modest budget; Durability, use of green and/or recycled materials

CATEGORIES

+Design

We invite industrial and furniture designers to submit proposals for removable and/or fixed concrete exterior furniture that can beautify the immediate vicinity of Bag Factory Artists’ Studios and surrounding areas and support our public activations/events/exhibitions. Proposals should make provisions for securing parts and/or the whole of the proposed furniture to avoid the threats of theft and/or vandalism.

Budget:          R 21 000.00 including production and installation

Scale:             Apply industry sizing standards to for example: table, chair, and/or bench, planters, etc., proposals

Considerations: Preference will be given to creative mobile furniture solutions from recycled materials. In the event of a permanent fixture, it must not obstruct movement by pedestrians on the street. The proposed furniture will likely be exposed to annual weather conditions. Position front façade of Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, 10 Mahlathini Street, Fordsburg.

+Painting/Drawing

We invite visual artists to submit proposals for artworks that respond to Bag Factory’s surrounding environment, multicultural social and economic fabric, resilience, optimism, and play.

Budget:          R 21 000.00 including framing and delivery

Scale: Maximum: 1.5 x 1.2m

Considerations:  All mediums are welcome

 +Public Art

Use Bag Factory’s Building Façades to create a durable mural/wall art that evokes interaction. We encourage proposals that consider the creation of a backdrop for passers-by to engage with. E.g. Street photography studio, a greening project, a call to action, etc.

Budget:          R 21 000.00 including production

Scale:             5m (h) x 3m (w) per project proposal

Considerations: The proposed public art/mural will likely be exposed to annual weather conditions. Position: front and/or back façades of Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, 10 Mahlathini Street and Fordsburg.

+Sculpture

We encourage small-scale sculpture proposals in various mediums made from durable materials.

Budget:          R 21 000.00  including production costs, where applicable a support base and delivery

Scale:             Measuring on average not larger than 1,5m3.

Considerations: The proposed sculpture is to be made of rust-proof/durable/treated materials. Please note: Maquettes will not be accepted.

 

+Textile/Natural fibers based Art

We encourage proposals for

Budget:          R 21 000.00 including production

Scale:             Measuring on average 1,5m3.

Considerations: The proposed artwork may use mixed mediums with +50% of it made up of textile and/or natural fibers. We encourage the use of recycled materials, which are durable and treated to prevent degradation.
