‘Curating Johannesburg: rest.less, under siege/in transition’ presents a selection of texts by artists, curators and cultural practitioners currently based in Johannesburg: Molemo Moiloa, Helena Uambembe, Olivia Botha, Dineke van der Walt and Duduzile Mathebula. The texts were produced during a three-day workshop led by visiting curator Fadzai Muchemwa (Zimbabwe) as part of a curatorial residency at the Bag Factory. The texts explore a multiplicity of perspectives, exploring how artistic production in Johannesburg has been challenging cultural relativism and is resisting and leading beyond the false forms presently representing the realities of the city. Also included are interviews between Muchemwa and Johannesburg-based artists Kagiso Patrick Mautloa, Neville Starling, Sandile Radebe, Phumulani Ntuli, and Pebofatso Mokoena.

This publication was produced within the framework of Art Connection Africa, a collaboration between KfW Stiftung and Triangle Network to foster visual art exchanges, capacity building and informal learning activities within sub-Saharan Africa.
