CLAUDIA WEGENER

I came to Joburg with the idea to continue a project and an obsession Išve been following for a while: walking in the streets of cities, watching the comings and goings of people.

'24 hrs' is a kind of work in which I take notes of peoplešs movements in the street and develop the hand-written footage into audible 'movies', a choreography after the event. I started to write in Joburg.

I started in Joubert Park, and I got caught up in events ... My wanderings in the city turned into LONG WALK, a kind of playful wandering for everyone to participate. I've been caught up in organising events before. In London, I work as a member of an artist group called foreign investment. LONG WALK grows out of this experience of collaborative work. Here in Joburg, I started to work with Pitso to realise LONG WALK: a public chess tournament on the fence between Joubert Park and the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Many people got involved along the way and contributed to realise the LONG WALK.

All this joined experience and dedication made up the work that became LONG WALK. The presentation at the Bag factory will be something like the eventšs celebratory aftermath, and perhaps, the beginning of something else we donšt yet even dare dreaming ... My written '24hrs' footage from the streets of Joburg remains to be processed ... For this publication, I have asked Patricia to translate some of my LONDON jingles into Swahili. So far, I have been working in English, because its use as a quasi-global urban Esperanto suits the writings of '24hrs'. The translation of LONDON footage into an African Esperanto might be another beginning ...
