Born in 1979, Dathini Mzayiya is currently working at the Bag factory Artist Studios in Fordsburg, Johannesburg. A former artist in residence at the Factory Of the Arts (FOA), a project of the Centre for Humanities Research at University of Western Cape (UWC) and at Greatmore Artist Studios in Woodstock, Cape Town. He graduated at the Community Arts Project (CAP) in Advanced Programme in Visual Arts, Woodstock, Cape Town in 2001.
Since then, he has participated in projects and exhibited his artworks internationally including in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Scotland, Ethiopia, Liberia, Kenya and Uganda. In his expressive approach generally inspired by everyday life, Mzayiya employs diverse mediums including Charcoal Drawings, Oil and Acrylic Paint, Film and Video Installations, Audio Visual Performance and Sculpture.
Dathini is a founding member of various arts Institutions and organisations including the Factory of the Arts at Centre for Humanities Research, University of Western Cape; Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA); Africa South Arts Initiative, CitySkin, a public space design firm and GUGULECTIVE artist collective.
