The Bag Factory provides 15 studios on a long-term basis (maximum 4 years) to artists based in Gauteng as part of its commitment to supporting local practitioners. The group, which reflects the diversity of artists and practices in Gauteng, forms an integral part of the Bag Factory’s life and becomes involved in the various activities taking place in the building. Studio artists’ contribution to events and their interaction with visiting artists creates a lively, supportive and dynamic working environment.

The Bag Factory provides a well-run studio space and a dynamic, interactive environment in which artists can create work. The Bag Factory’s resident artists are well-represented in corporate and public collections. Several of them have international reputations and are frequently invited to represent South Africa at global art events and forums such as the Havana and Venice Biennales and Documenta.

The studios at the Bag Factory are currently occupied by: Nadine Hutton, Thenjiwe Nkosi, David Koloane, Diana Hyslop, Sam Nhlengethwa, Pat Mautloa, Myer Taub, Richard Penn, Reshma Chhiba, Lester Adams and Lerato Shadi.
